Travel Pals with Characters of Character
Summer time has begun! I thought this would be a great way to keep the kids engaged in travel, in literacy, in conversations and in building their good character, too! Really very simple, with the templates below, print them out, if you can use card stock it makes them a bit stronger and if you can laminate them they will last all summer long if not a lifetime!
Travel Pals and how to use them as follows:
Talk about the trait with your children first. Discuss with them what it means, how it looks, how it feels and what is expected of them with this trait. Perhaps make a poster referencing the trait by cutting out pictures from a magazine, drawing pictures, writing words, be creative and be encouraging. Visuals are powerful and a great reminder to stay on task. Read books, play games and truly reinforce the trait at home, in the community, at camp, summer school, in your back yard, at a friends house or family picnic! Build a strong foundation for your child to internalize the trait, to understand and to feel comfortable to ask questions about the trait. Be a role model for your children, they are watching you, listening to your conversations and most likely want to be just like you when they grow up!
Introduce the Character to your child! They are inviting, friendly, cute and want to be a part of daily activities, conversations, and adventures taken each and every day. You don’t need to use all nine in one day, take it slow, focus on a trait that your child may need some reinforcements with and take the character with you wherever you may go! In the car, on your bike, on a boat, for a walk, to camp, to meetings, watching a movie, eating lunch, doing chores, all the things we do all day long can now be supported with the character and your child has a pal to spend time with.
Summers are different for each family, try to keep them simple and basic, much like your character. Have a travel bag packed to grab as you decide to go to the park, visit a friend, drive to the beach, go on a scavenger hunt and more. Include in this bag crayons, books, markers, bubbles, jump rope, chalk, water color paints and the characters, too. Having things to choose from will keep your children busy.
Have a bag for writing and drawing like the mentioned items above. I’d include plain copy paper, composition notebooks, we have one for each character that your children can write in all summer long and is another visual reminder to be of good character.
Take pictures! (You can share them on social media, #charactersofcharacter or email me) If your child is having fun with the characters, take pictures and feel free to share them with us to share with others. Friendship Frog has already been to Alaska! Feel free to write to the characters, too. They love getting mail and as long as you include a S.A.S.E. the character will write back. A summer Pen Pal! Keep literacy, communications and imaginations alive this summer as you travel, stay at home and continue to reinforce vital core values in your children. You won’t be sorry as they days may linger at times, the years go by fast. Let’s make the world better, TOGETHER! Let’s see where these characters travel this summer and with who, what they learned, what they read, where they played, etc. What a fun way to spend the dog days of summer! Our books on Amazon.
