National Pencil Day

National Pencil Day is on March 30 and it is the perfect moment to explore these old writing tools. This simple instrument has meant so much to mankind. It allows people to express themselves, helps them find their creativity, and supports all kinds of scribbles and doodles. Did you know that one pencil can write up to 45,000 words? Pencils have been used for ages, and have gone through many changes in terms of their design, but have you ever wondered who came up with the brilliant idea of attaching an eraser to a pencil? Well, Hymen Lipman was the man behind this great discovery and was responsible for making our lives easier. We celebrate this day to honor this superb creation. Taken from National Day website.

Think about all the pencils available today! Colored pencils for artwork, writing and creating beautiful works of literacy. I always have said to students, “Write On” to encourage them with writing and a positive affirmation of sorts. Our characters love pencils to do the same. If you haven’t yet tried to draw with these fun pencils, I encourage you to do so. If you have not yet written with a pencil in years, I again encourage you to do so! Pencils hold power in their words and drawings, but, remember that YOU are the author of each. Write on today and encourage your children to do the same in some form of art or literacy.

Each of the following pages is one of the nine Characters of Character holding a pencil. I encourage you to print one out, put your child’s name on the pencil. Discuss the trait. Allow your child to color the character. Use as a sticker chart or use as a Journal cover. Always keep these visual reminders in a space where your child can easily be reminded and encouraged to engage in them. And, as always, be a role model for your child.

TELL me and I forget, TEACH me and I remember, INVOLVE me and I learn. Ben Franklin
