Teaching our early learners social skills and character development involves creating an environment to learn, build opportunities for interaction and to model these traits which are the focus on good character. these skills are critical for developing healthy relationships and a firm foundation.
Friendship Frog shares some tips to teach friendship at an early age:
PLAY
Preschoolers love to play, arrange play dates with family and friends and build an environment where children practice interacting with others, to share, to take turns and to have conversations with children of their own age.
BUDDY SYSTEM
This is a good way to show our early learners how to play with others, not just a best friend. Pair the children together to play for a period of time. They will learn about one another and a new friendship may form!
ROLE MODEL
Be a role model, early learners learn by example, therefore, when you model kindness, being respectful and good behaviors so will your child. Children learn by what they see and hear. How you respond to conversations, situations and feelings of others is on display! Show them how to listen to others and respond in a thoughtful fashion.
ENCOURAGE
Encourage your child to share, to take turns, to communicate and to understand and recognize the feelings of others and of their own feelings. This builds a better relationship and respect. With different scenarios children can practice coping skills, resolve conflicts and build a firm foundation for an honest friendship.
