What Are The 5 Senses?

Teaching children their 5 senses with Friendship Frog can be a lot of fun, I think you’ll find a new friendship when all is said and done!

As an adult, we are fully aware of our 5 senses and that some are more in tune than others. It’s really a lot of fun to show a child that they have these 5 senses and how they can tune into them, too. While we use sight, sound, touch, taste and smell every day, many days we use more of one than the others. Friendship Frog has a few ideas to help you along the way to have with your children and allow them to play, learn and grow these!

Let’s take advantage of the Spring and all the rain we have been getting. Go outdoors with your children and talk about all the good that rain offers us, for example, the ol’ cliche “April Showers bring May Flowers” comes to mind. After pointing out to your child their 5 senses, while outdoors, now ask them what they see after a rainfall? The grass may turn greener, there may be puddles, there may be drips of water on things, etc. Ask your child what do the smell after a rainfall? You can smell the rain coming many times, depending on where you live. Maybe that’s where the term, “Spring is in the air” comes from? Ask your child to touch the rain dripped grass, waterlogged leaves or the drenched piece of cloth, these things feel different if it’s rained on them. If you’re comfortable, place a cup outdoors to catch the rain, ask your child how it tastes? What do you hear when it rains, you can hear it hit the roof, or a table top outdoors, etc. Tune into those senses and have fun with your children. To be. honest, a wet dog comes to mind as I type this, if you’ve ever smelled a wet dog you know what I’m talking about!

Not everyone has tip-top senses. When we don’t we tend to tune into one more than the other. If your sight isn’t 20/20 you might depend more on your smell or touch during the day. By bringing this awareness to your child they will discover them, use them with more awareness and want to discover more things to do with them.

What is your strongest sense? Our character Friendship Frog helps you talk about them with your children. Discussing these will bring conversations and curiosity to life and is a wonderful way to discover different smells, textures and sights with your children, too! Click here to watch the video.

Friendship Frog has a lot of books and ideas to engage your children on friendship, too. Hopefully your children would want to learn more about Friendship Frog! There are a few different Composition notebooks, too on this character. Let your child take them with them and write down the different senses they use during the day. Or, to write a note to their friend or to just doodle in. It’s a great visual reminder and a lovely way to open conversations with your children and youth, too. I look forward to meeting you!
